Why Bomber Leather Jackets Are Still on the Runways

Why Bomber Leather Jackets Are Still on the Runways

Bomber leather jackets are still on the runways of the world, nearly a century after they were first invented.First designed for bomber pilots in the UK and then the USA, they have a kind of nostalgia about them, coupled with practicality and a widely appealing look. They are also warm and comfortable to wear. This ongoing, it seems ever-popular fashion trend also owes its ongoing appeal to those in the fashion business - people like Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, the British friends who founded the hugely successful rag & bone clothing in New York in 2002.As recently as their spring show in 2009, bomber leather jackets were being sported on the runway along with other clothing items that also went back to their basically British design roots.Along with both brown and black bomber leather jackets, there were some quite stylish fabric jackets and blazers, simple sporty styled parkas teamed with a variety of dresses, short tanks, long pants and leggings. After the show, Wainright reportedly said the new collection owed its inspiration to their "military-school heritage" combined with a "utilitarian, made-in America ethos".A closer look at the runway photographs shows how cleverly the rag & bone designers make bomber leather jackets work in today's fashion world. For example a brown bomber jacket was paired with a silver-gray jersey dress, a simple black leather belt and pair of black, no-nonsense open-toes shoes. The other reason that this sort of jacket is still on the runways is because for years and years superstars and fashion moguls have worn them. They are also seen in movies, keeping the allure alive. For example, James Stewart wore one in the 1957 movie, Night Passage.Gary Cooper wore one in For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Harrison Ford sported his favorite bomber leather jacket in Indiana Jones.Robert Hooks, playing Fleet Admiral Harry Morrow, wore one in Star Trek III. The Search for Spock (1984).More recently Arnold Schwarzenegger wore one in the 2000 action movie, The 6th Day.
